Effectiveness of Topical anesthesia alone in manual small incision cataract surgery.

AIM
To study the effectiveness of 0.5% proparacaine in M-SICS without any peribulbar or intracameral drugs.
METHOD
30 patients were studied. 0.5% proparacaine instilled in operating eye 2 minutes before surgery. Effectiveness accessed through pain perception during surgery and 3 hours post surgery, graded from 0 to 3, 0 being no pain and 3 being significant pain. Surgeon satisfaction accessed based on patient cooperation, graded from 0 to 3, 0 being least cooperative to 3 being greatest.
RESULTS
Out of 30 patients studied, 17 patients had no pain, 12 patients had slight irritation, 1 patient had mild pain during surgery. 3 hours after surgery 19 patients had no pain, 10 patients had slight irritation, 1 patient had mild pain. Out of 30 patients, 28 were completely cooperative, 2 patients were cooperative to some extent.
CONCLUSION
MSICS using topical proparacaine 0.5% eye drops without any intracameral or periocular block can provide sufficient patient comfort and avoid complications.
