"Evaluation of Mebiomian glands and Tear film in Pterygium patients "

Introduction: Pterygium is associated with tear film abnormalities and meibomian gland disorders, which may lead to vision threatening complications.
Material and Methods: The study was conducted in the out patient department of ophthalmology , AIMS , Bellur, Mandya. The TBUT, Schirmer’s and Meibomian glands were estimated in one eye having pterygium and other eye keeping as control. A TBUT of <10secs, Schirmer <10secs and Meibomian glands <1/3 of lid area considered to be abnormal.
Results: The Schirmer’s test showed 44% of dry eye  28.8% mild , 8.8%moderate and 6.6% was severe dry eye disease. And TBUT test showed 48.8% dry eye 31.1% mild , 8.8% moderate and 8.8% severe dry eye disease. 10 patients had grade 1, 15 pts with grade 2 and 7patients with grade 3 meibomian gland disorder. In eye with pterygium results were significantly different.
Conculsion: Meibomian gland and tear film may be altered in patients having pterygium , which may lead to ocular discomfort and dry eye.
