A CASE REPORT OF PATIENT WITH OPACIFIED IOL WHO UNDERWENT IOL EXCHANGE SURGERY

PURPOSE : To report a case of opacified IOL for a patient who underwent cataract surgery in 2018.
METHOD : A 75 year old female had complaints of reduced vision in the RE since 1 year. She underwent RE cataract surgery 6 years ago. Records revealed that a hydrophilic acrylic foldable IOL was implanted. After taking history and a thorough examination, an IOL exchange surgery was planned.
RESULTS : Patient had reduced RE visual acuity. On slit lamp examination, a diffuse opacification of the IOL in the RE was observed. Patient was posted for RE IOL exchange surgery. Intraoperatively, capsular fibrosis with adhesion of IOL to fibrotic capsule was noted. An iris claw lens was implanted, as posterior capsular weakening was noted. Vision improved post surgery.
CONCLUSION : The case highlights the importance of counselling patients regarding the remote possibility of IOL opacification in the future, and the likelihood of repeat surgery for the same to meet favorable refractive goals.
