Retained upper lid foreign body: A Rare and unusual differential diagnosis of lid swelling

Purpose: To report a rare case of retained upper eyelid foreign body. Materials and methods: We are reporting a case of 12 years old boy who presented with swelling in the left upper lid area for the last four years. He gives a history of trauma over his left eye with a glass bottle leading to a wound four years back which was sutured in local hospital. On examination a hard, mobile and mild tender mass was felt. Results: The patient was posted for surgical exploration under general anaesthesia. On surgical exploration, two glass pieces were removed. Conclusion: Periocular foreign bodies may cause complications or can be asymptomatic and remain undetected for months or years. Nonorganic materials like glass and plastic are inert or can be toxic and elicit a local irritative response. Periocular foreign bodies should be removed by surgical exploration as soon as possible.
