Glaucoma

Study on RNFL thickness using SD-OCT in patients with POAG, Ocular hypertension and Normal eyes.

Purpose: Study on Retinal nerve fiber layer thickness using spectral domain-optical coherence tomography in patients with Primary open angle glaucoma, Ocular hypertension and Normal eyes.
Methods: This is a case control study in tertiary care hospital in North Karnataka in which 15 Glaucomatous eyes, 15 Ocular hypertension and 15 Normal eyes underwent ophthalmological examinations like, best corrected visual acuity, intraocular pressure, fundus evaluation on slit lamp using 90 D lens and were scanned with OCT to evaluate the RNFL thickness.
Results: Out of these 45 patients, the mean RNFL thickness was significantly less in ocular hypertensives and glaucomatous eyes than in normal eyes. Ocular hypertensives had thinner RNFL thickness when compared to normal eyes. This is statistically significant.
Conclusion: Optical coherence tomography is capable of detecting changes at the level of RNFL and early detection of this RNFL thickness is very helpful for early and specific management.
