Diabetic Retinopathy & Medical retina

CORRELATION OF SEVERITY OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY WITH COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT IN TYPE 2 DIABETICS

OBJECTIVES- To assess the severity of diabetic retinopathy and its correlation with cognitive impairment (CI) in patients with Type 2 DM.
METHOD- A cross sectional observational study was done . An ophthalmological examination with dilated fundoscopy & 2D fundus camera photography, categorised into having DR or no DR & graded according to ETDRS classification into mild, moderate, severe & very severe NPDR & PDR. A 30 point Montreal Cognitive assessment- basic (MoCA-B) was used to assess the severity of cognitive impairment in the patients & was graded as mild (>11), moderate (6−10) & severe (< 6).
RESULTS-. A total of 215 patients were included in this study and DR was found in 48.5% of patients with type 2 diabetes. The MoCA cutoff scores showed that 25% had significant cognitive impairment in PDR group and 12% of no/mild DR group.
CONCLUSION- More patients with moderate &severe NPDR were found to have cognitive impairment compared to mild or no NPDR.
