STUDY ON EVALUATION OF RISK FACTORS&VISUAL OUTCOME AFTER PHACOEMULSIFICATION IN  PRESENILE CATARACT

PURPOSE: To know the risk factors &visual outcome after  phacoemulsification in presenile cataract patients.
METHODOLOGY: This is a hospital based study conducted in patients with presenile cataract in between 35-55 years age group.Detailed history was taken regarding the risk factors for presenile catarct.After thorough examination patients were  posted for phacoemulsification cataract surgery.The postop visual outcome in all patients was noted.
RESULTS: Out of 50 patients 22 were male&28 were female.Most common cause for presenile cataract was Idiopathic (65.9%) followed by Diabetes mellitus in 10.8%.History of Smoking & high myopia in 7.5% each.3.3% patients had dermatological disease.Long term steroid use in 1.7%.The postop visual acuity in all patients ranged from 6/6 to 6/12.
CONCLUSION: The strong risk factor in our study was diabetes mellitus followed by smoking.A significant visual improvement results after phacoemulsification cataract surgery in presenile cataract patients.
