CLINICAL STUDY AND VISUAL OUTCOME IN PATIENTS WITH COMMOTIO RETINAE – A PROSPECTIVE STUDY

INTRODUCTION: Commotio retinae refers to traumatic retinopathy secondary to direct or indirect trauma to the globe, may be present at areas of scleral impact (coup) and or distant sites(contrecoup)including macula. Incidence is about 30% of all eye traumas.
PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical profile and visual outcome in patients with commotio retinae.
METHODS & MATERIALS: A prospective study among 20 patients with closed globe injury attending the Ophthalmology OPD from january 2023 to June 2023.
RESULTS: Out of 20 patients, 15 (75%) were males and 5(25%) were females, between 20-40 years of age. BCVA equal to 6/60 in 12 (60%) and less than 6/60 in 8 (40%) patients. Early intervention done in 2 days with oral steroids, follow up after 4 weeks for visual acuity equal to 6/9 in 18(90%) and no improvement in 2 (10%) patients due to late presentation.
CONCLUSION: Younger age, injury with blunt objects and early intervention had better visual acuity in patients with commotio retinae.
