Comprehensive Ophthalmology

EYE – AS A WINDOW FOR SYSTEMIC DISEASES

PURPOSE: To elicit the importance of ocular examination in the diagnosis of systemic diseases.
METHOD: Case series study of 6 patients attended the Ophthalmology OPD in tertiary care centre.
RESULTS: 1. 45/F with BCVA 6/12, Exudative retinal detachment of right eye and Mantoux test positive diagnosed as Pulmonary koch’s.
2. 18/F with BCVA 6/36, bilateral choroidal haemorrhage, raised ACE levels diagnosed as Sarcoidosis.
3. 49/F with BCVA 6/60, hyperaemic disc of right eye with CT brain showing Meningioma.
4. 25/F with blepharitis, Salzmann nodular degeneration in left eye, lesions over face diagnosed as Acne Rosacea.
5. 33/M with BCVA CF 1m, superotemporal subluxation of lens and aortic dissection on 2DEcho diagnosed as Marfan’s syndrome.
6. 45/F with BCVA 6/24, Schirmer’s type1 5mm both eyes diagnosed as Sjogren’s syndrome with positive Anti-SSA and SSB antibodies.
CONCLUSION: Ocular examination helps in early diagnosis and management of systemic diseases due to various etiologies.
