EFFECT OF CATARACT SURGERY ON THE PROGRESSION OF DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

PURPOSE: To study the effect of cataract surgery on progression of DR in Type 2 DM
METHODS: It’s a prospective comparative study of progression of DR in operated eyes compared to unoperated eye of same patient . DR grading done as per abbreviated early treatment diabetic retinopathy study. Progression was assessed by customized scale based on signs of DR between vascular arcades, disc, macula and 1.5 DD beyond
RESULTS: A total of 32 patients were studied and 18 (56.2%) were females ,14 (43.7%) males. 19 (59%) in operated and17 (53%) in unoperated eye had DR changes. Progression of DR in operated eyes were 11 (57%) , unoperated eye 2 (11%). In operated eyes progression was mild in 9 (81%), moderate in 2 (18%) , mild in both unoperated eyes. Eyes with progression had DM of >10 years in both groups. HbA1c was > 8 in all operated eyes and >10 in unoperated eyes

CONCLUSION: Cataract surgery has effect on progression of DR. More with increased duration and poor control of HbA1c level
