Macular Edema Post Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment Repair with Pars Plana Vitrectomy & ILM peeling

Background: The aim was to study the incidence and morphology of macular edema after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV)with ILM peeling for primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD)
Methods: A retrospective study conducted over 1 year period among adults who underwent PPV + ILM peeling with endolaser and silicone oil injection for primary RRD repair. The primary outcome measure was the incidence of macular edema at 3 months following vitrectomy for RRD.
Results: 20 eyes were included . Incidence of macular edema was found to be 35%( 7 out of 20) . Most common type being spongiform . Patients with advanced PVR changes at presentation were noted to have poor visual outcome . None of the patients had epiretinal membrane formation or redetachment. 3 patients with increased central retinal thickness on OCT were given posterior subtenon triamcinolone injection .
Conclusion: Macular edema is relatively a common complication after PPV which can result in suboptimal visual gain .
