A CLINICAL STUDY OF INTRAOCULAR FOREIGN BODY RELATED ENDOPHTHALMITIS IN A TERTIARY EYE CARE CENTRE

PURPOSE : To determine demography and risk factors of IOFB related endophthalmitis.
METHOD : A study of IOFB cases who reported to a tertiary eye care centre between Sept 2022 to May 2023. They were divided into 2 groups(with and without endophthalmitis), and a comparison of age, sex, IOFB features, wound location and time taken to report was done. Vitreous tap was sent for microbiology evaluation.
RESULTS : 23 patients came with IOFB in the study period, out of which 6 had endophthalmitis(26.08%). IOFB type was mostly stone. All cases had IOFB in vitreous cavity, followed a corneal tear, and showed late presentation post trauma. 4.8mm was the avg size of IOFB. Only 1 case yielded S.epidermidis. After analysis, IOFB size(p=0.02) and IOFB type (p=0.023) were found as significant RF for developing endophthalmitis.
CONCLUSION : According to our study, increased size and non metallic IOFB were related to development of endophthalmitis. Timing of presentation could be an added risk factor.
