TITLE: MATERNAL DIABETES- A PLAUSIBLE RISK FACTOR FOR RETINOPATHY OF PREMATURITY

PURPOSE:This study helps us in understanding the relationship between maternal diabetes mellitus and ROP.
METHOD:This is a case control study of the inborns and outborns of tertiary care centre from 1st Sept2022 to 1st May2023.Infants with the criteria of GA<=32 weeks and BW<=1.5kg where included.Case-26 infants with ROP,Control-26 infants without ROP.The risk factors were statistically analysed.
RESULTS:The study showed a result of 38.5% +ve association of maternal diabetes in case group and 7.7% +ve association in control group and P value of 0.019.On analysing the case group n=2 had plus disease,n=4 had stage3 ROP, n=2 had stage2 ROP ,hence comparing the severity of ROP in infants of diabetic mother.
CONCLUSION:Prematurity is the leading cause of development of ROP. Diabetes is a risk factor for prematurity hence maternal diabetes may have both direct and indirect impact on ROP development. Hence diabetes history of mother should be given utmost importance during screening of ROP.
