Safety, Efficacy & post-op Endothelial Cell Density in conventional phaco vs FLACS in dense cataract

Purpose: This study compared safety, efficacy & post-op Endothelial Cell Density (ECD) in dense cataracts using standard phacoemulsification vs LENSAR femtosecond laser-assisted surgery,100 patients 50 in each group underwent conventional phaco or FLACS with LENSAR femtolaser
Results: Pre-op, no significant differences in age, cataract grade, & ECD density were observed between the groups p>005 for all parameters Intra-operatively, the phaco group had significantly higher mean ultrasound time1117 ± 65 sec & fluid volume 3864 ± 1373 ml compared to the FLACS group ultrasound time803 ± 377 sec, fluid volume339 ± 954 ml p<005 At 6-month follow-up, the FLACS group showed significantly higher endothelial cell density225016 ± 23009 cells/mm2 compared to the phaco group 21269 ± 3556 cells/mm2 p<005
Conclusion: The study suggests that FLACS group with customized nuclear fragmentation patterns reduces intra-operative phaco time & fluid usage, which improves post-operative ECD in dense cataracts
