Macular Ganglion cell layer and peripapillary RNFL thickness changes after PRP: A SD-OCT based study

PURPOSE: To identify the changes in Macular Ganglionic cell layer and peripapillary RNFL thickness in patients with PDR after full scatter PRP using SD-OCT. METHODS: A Centre based prospective interventional case series carried out in patients with PDR without macular edema. 40 eyes of 32 patients were treated with full scatter PRP & followed up at every 2nd, 4th and 6th month. SD-OCT was performed at baseline & at 6 months post PRP. RESULTS: Analyzed based on SD-OCT, the average GCL thickness increased from 76.25 at baseline to 77.80 at 6th month follow up post PRP (p value 0.472) & average RNFL thickness reduced from 86.60 at baseline to 85.80 at 6th month follow up post PRP (p value 0.560). CONCLUSIONS: Changes in macular GCL and RNFL thickness after PRP were statistically not significant and showed no decrease in macular GCL thickness. Our study reinforces the principle of PRP, indicating that the macular function is preserved and there is no direct damage to macula after laser.
