THYROID HORMONE PROFILE AND VITAMIN D LEVELS IN KERATOCONUS PATIENTS

PURPOSE – To assess Thyroid hormone and Vitamin D levels in Keratoconus patients
METHODS – In this prospective cross-sectional study, patients who were diagnosed of having keratoconus were evaluated for serum free T3 , free T4, TSH , Vitamin D levels
RESULTS – 50 patients (100 eyes) were enrolled into the study in which free T3 was decreased in 8%, raised in 2% and normal in 90% patients, free T4 was raised in 2% and was within normal range in 98% patients, TSH was raised in 4% and was within normal range in 96% patients. Among all the patients, 3 had normal serum vitamin D levels (between 31 to 100 ng/milliliter), 2 had insufficient vitamin D levels (between 21 to 30 ng/milliliter) and 45 had deficient vitamin D levels (less than 20 ng/milliliter)
CONCLUSION - There was a significant decrease (94%) in vitamin D levels and deranged thyroid hormone levels (16%) in keratoconus patients. We suggest Vitamin D and Thyroid hormone level estimation in all keratoconus patients
