Refractive Surgery

Applying Biomechanics’ Algorithm to Refractive Surgery – the BAIT Nomogram

Purpose – To delineate an algorithm to plan refractive surgeries on the basis of corneal tomography and biomechanics, to select the right candidates for each treatment. Methods – Based on our algorithm, 100 eyes (Group 1) - normal tomography and biomechanical indices; 100 eyes (Group 2) Borderline tomography and borderline biomechanical indices; 80 eyes (Group 3) - Borderline tomography and normal biomechanical indices; 65 eyes (Group 4) - Abnormal tomography and abnormal biomechanical indices, underwent corneal tomography (Pentacam HR) and biomechanical assessment (Corvis-ST) pre-operatively. Refractive surgery was performed as per the algorithm. After surgery, the visual acuity, tomography and biomechanics were re-assessed at 1, 3, 6, 12 & 36 months post-operatively.
Results – There was no significant difference in efficacy and safety index (p<0.05) in 4 groups. Conclusion – Application of this algorithm showed promising results in the surgical management of refractive errors.
