Diabetic Retinopathy & Medical retina

Role of OCT biomarkers and systemic inflammatory index in Type 2 diabetes

Aim: To determine the correlation between OCT biomarkers and systemic immune inflammatory index (SII) in diabetic retinopathy
Methods: This is a case control study where 30 diabetic patients with varying grades of retinopathy and 30 diabetic controls were evaluated for visual acuity, anterior segment examination, fundoscopy and OCT. Systemic inflammatory markers like SII, neutrophil lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were calculated and compared with OCT biomarkers including hyperreflective foci, intraretinal cyst, disorganization of retinal inner layers (DRIL) and sub-retinal fluid (SRF).
Results: It was found that majority of the patients with diabetic retinopathy showed a higher value of SII and among the OCT biomarkers, hyperreflective foci(HRF) was found to significantly correlate with SII.
Conclusion: This study demonstrates the value of simple biomarker SII in predicting the risk for progression of diabetic retinopathy and thus helps in monitoring follow up.
