Cataract

To study the clinical profile and postoperative outcomes in paediatric cataract cases.

Purpose: To study the clinical profile and postoperative outcomes of paediatric cataracts in a tertiary care hospital in Vijayapura. Materials/Methods: We enrolled 20 eyes of 12 patients with paediatric cataracts. We noted parameters like demographic profile, type of cataract, nystagmus, systemic comorbidities, intraoperative or postoperative complications and postoperative visual outcomes. Results: Mean age was 9.05±3.34 years. Among them, 17 eyes (85%) had lamellar cataracts, making it the most common type. Seventeen eyes (85%) had nystagmus. One patient had Down syndrome, and the rest had no systemic abnormalities. No intraoperative and postoperative complications were noted. 95% of patients had a postoperative improvement of vision at 1 month. Conclusion: We can conclude that lamellar cataract is the most common type of paediatric cataract. Early diagnosis and appropriate intervention are necessary for visual prognosis and psychosocial development in paediatric cataract patients.
