Is it Typical or Atypical Optic neuritis: Does it matter?
The acute inflammatory or demyelinating form of optic neuropathy that involves one or both optic nerves is termed optic neuritis (ON). The most common type of ON is labeled “typical”, or “demyelinating ON”, which may be associated with multiple sclerosis (MS) or may be idiopathic. This type has certain typical clinical features and the clinical course in most patients is good with good visual recovery. However atypical optic neuritis entails clinical manifestations that deviate from the classic pattern of features. Atypical ON can have devastating visual results if not detected and treated in a timely fashion. These atypical ON are of varied etiology and visual outcomes varies with etiology. Thus, it is critical that cases of atypical optic neuritis are recognized, investigated appropriately and appropriate treatment initiated to preserve vision.
The chief instructor has special interest in optic nerve disorders. She has many years of experience in successfully managing patients with typical and atypical optic neuritis. Due to this experience she has recognized the pitfalls of not distinguishing atypical ON from typical ON and treating atypical optic neuritis.
