Dr.Nivedhitha Nikhil
Video-interactive course on Cerebral Visual Impairment (CVI)
CVI is defined as bilateral visual impairment in the presence of a normal ocular examination, reduced visual acuity or subnormal visual performance, and evidence of damage to posterior visual pathways. Children with special needs form a unique subset with regards to visual function and examination techniques needed to assess them. With more awareness among the general public, neurologists, and pediatricians, these children are referred for assessment to the ophthalmologist or optometrist at an early age.
This IC aims to provide a clinical practical guideline and a good systematic approach for examination of visual functions and interventions in a child with developmental delay and low vision. Encountering a child with developmental impairment for the first time in the clinic may be a different experience
for the ophthalmologist who may not be seeing special children routinely. Hence it is important to recognise child's visual status and plan intervention.
The Chief Instructor has a super-specialization in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus. She is currently working in a reputed tertiary care hospital as part of a multi-disciplinary team which caters to children with special needs. She is involved and has trained doctors and optometrists in Functional Vision Assessment and Vision Rehabilitation strategies for children with developmental delays.
