MANAGEMENT OF A 3 MONTH OLD CHILD WITH CONGENITAL CATARACT

PURPOSE: Management of a 3 month old child with congenital cataract.

METHODS: 3 month male child with white pupillary reflex in both eyes was diagnosed with congenital cataract. On examination child had a flat occiput and Mongoloid slant. Blood investigations showed raised TLC. Ultrasound of abdomen was suggestive of mild hepatomegaly. TORCH panel was positive for Rubella virus. B-scan was normal. Lens extraction was done. Anterior capsulorrhexis was done by push-pull technique. Phacoaspiration and Posterior capsulorrhexis along with anterior vitrectomy was done in both eyes. IOL was not implanted.

RESULT: Child was rehabilitated with +16D spectacles in both eyes for intermediate vision and planned for secondary IOL implantation at a later date.

CONCLUSION: Early management of congenital cataract with IOL implantation gives good visual prognosis, thus preventing amblyopia.
