Retrospective study of clinical profile of amblyopia among children in a tertiary care centre

INTRODUCTION- Amblyopia is a major cause of vision impairment in children. It represents an insult to the visual system during the   period of development. 
AIM  to determine the clinical profile of  children with amblyopia 
METHODOLOGY Retrospective study conducted by review of hospital records of children in the age group of 5 to 18 years with amblyopia. Age, gender, presence and type of squint, refractive error, type of amblyopia, treatment details were noted.  
RESULT Out of the 25 patients, 21 had unilateral amblyopia, 4 had bilateral amblyopia. Mean age in years was 12 ± 3.06. 56 % were males and 44 % were females.  10 children had strabismus. Amblyopia was due to high refractive error (40 %), followed by  anisometropic amblyopia (24%) , strabismic amblyopia (24%). 16 had severe amblyopia.14 children were advised patching of normal eye.  
CONCLUSION Majority of the children with amblyopia were unilateral, due to high refractive error. Most common type of squint was exotropia.
