Surgical Retina

Dissecting the breaks

Purpose:To determine the impact of time to surgery on visual outcome in Rhegmatogenous Retinal detachment repair.
Materials and Methods:This is a hospital based retrospective case study of 50 patients who underwent surgery for RRD in a tertiary care hospital in Bangalore from July’22 to March’23.
Result:Out of 50 eyes 33 were with macula off and 17 had macula on. Overall difference in postoperative BCVA was seen b/w patients treated before and after 3 months(p=0.009).Most improvement was seen in patients with surgery within 2 weeks in both groups (macula on-0.94,macula off-2.88). Among the macula off group significant improvement difference in BCVA was observed for patients b/w 2wks-3m & >3months, however the same was not present in macula on group.
Conclusion:Prompt Intervention in the initial 14 days despite macula status was important. Lack of difference in visual improvement after 2 weeks in macula on patients suggests that the photoreceptor loss decreases after a certain time.
