Diabetic Retinopathy & Medical retina

CORRELATION OF SERUM LIPIDS WITH MACULAR THICKNESS IN PATIENTS WITH DIABETIC RETINOPATHY

Purpose- To correlate the significance of serum lipids with macular thickness in diabetic retinopathy patients.

Method- A cross sectional study done on 60 patients with diabetic retinopathy were evaluated based on history, ocular examination and blood investigations. Data was collected and analyzed.

Result- out of 60 patients, 40 (66.67%) were males and 20 (33.33%) were females. A significant association (p=0.0000) was found between dyslipidemia and diabetic retinopathy.

Conclusion- There is a significant increase in serum lipids in a patient with diabetic retinopathy which was found in current study. Risk factors such as duration of DM, glycemic control and dyslipidemia should be considered for regular check-up and early detection of diabetic retinopathy. The present study gives good evidence of a significant correlation between higher levels of total cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL and lower levels of HDL with presence of clinically significant macular edema.
