STUDY OF REFRACTIVE ERRORS IN SCHOOL GOING CHILDREN VISITING OPHTHALMOLOGY OPD AT TERTIARY CENTRE

PURPOSE:The aim of this study is early detection and correction of refractive errors
METHODS:A Cross-sectional study was conducted among 200 school going children
of 5-18yrs visiting Ophthalmology OPD at a tertiary health centre. All children underwent
cmplete ophthalmic examination including cycloplegic refraction to identify the types,
measure and record the refractive errors for analysis.
RESULTS:The results of this study showed that the total number of children with
refractive errors were 24(12%) among which myopia was the most common refractive
error present in 13(54.16%) children, followed by astigmatism in 10(41.66%) children and
hypermetropia in the remaining 1(4.16%) child. The age group 14-18yrs had high
  prevalence of refractive error(36%).
CONCLUSION: Refractive errors were most prevalent in 14-18yrs age group. The most
