"STUDY ON INCIDENCE, RISK FACTORS AND DURATION OF DEVELOPMENT OF PCO IN PSUEDOPHAKIC EYES"

INTRODUCTION: posterior capsule is left behind after cataract surgery over a period of time, opacities are noted along the posterior capsule known as PCO(also known as after cataract), which may develop in few months or years after cataract surgery.
PCO is the most common delayed complication following cataract surgery.
OBJECTIVE: To determine Incidence, Duration and Risk factors in development of PCO after cataract surgery.
METHOD: A Prospective study of 124 patients attending ophthalmology OPD presenting with DOV noted to have cataractous lens changes. All patients underwent MSICS with PMMA PCIOL implantation.
RESULT: The incidence of PCO was found to be more among paediatric age group. Diabetes, Myopia, Steroid usage, uveitis and sub-capsular cataract are found as risk factors. Mean duration of development of PCO was 13.o4+/-4.78mths.
CONCLUSION:PCO still remain as a threatening complication following cataract surgery. Patients with risk factor need regular followup.
