Cataract

Comparative study of topical vs intracameral mydriatics in sustaining mydriasis in cataract surgery.

PURPOSE- To compare topical vs intracameral mydriatics in sustaining mydriasis in cataract surgery.
Method- A cross sectional study done on 30 patients undergoing cataract surgery were evaluated based on history and detailed evaluation. Preoperative pupillary dilatation using topical tropicamide (0.8%) and phenylephrine (5%) eyedrops. Intraoperative pupillary dilatation using intracameral mydriatics (lignocaine 1% and adrenaline 0.01%)
Result- Out of 30 patients 20 (66.67%) were male and 10 (33.33%) were female. The mydriasis achieved with topical eyedrops is 7.21+_0.80mm. mydriasis achieved with intracameral mydriatics is 7.80 +_0.8mm. This difference of 0.59mm was statistically significant (p<0.001)
Conclusion- There is significant pupillary dilatation with intracameral mydriatics. However pupillary dilatation with intracameral mydriatics is rapid, effective, stable and safe intraoperatively.
