Cataract

Macro mineral levels as Markers for senile cataract-A case control study

Introduction:The purpose of this study is to correlate serum calcium(Ca), phosphorus(P), magnesium(Mg) levels and estimation of Ca: Mg ratio in senile cataract patients as compared to those without cataract.
Method:This is prospective study conducted in which total of 168 patients were included in the study, of which 84 were considered cases (cataract patients with no comorbidities) and 84 were controls (healthy non cataract patients). In both groups patients were aged >50 yrs with age and gender matched controls. After which they underwent ophthalmic examination. Serum Ca, Mg, P levels were measured.
Results:Average Ca, P levels in cases was increased by 3% and 25% respectively than controls. Average Mg levels 7% more in controls when compared to cases. The average Ca/Mg ratio is 7.5% more in cases.
Conclusion:Based on these findings, it may be concluded that increase in Ca and P concentrations can be taken as markers for development of senile cataract and helpful in its prevention.
